Really? I think we can all agree that that doesn't quite cut it as a definition. Though I have no clue what it's like to be a dad, I do know that it takes something special. The role of a father is so unique and different than that of a mother. I believe we were created for both - we need the nurturing and gentleness our mothers provide, and the stability, security and adventure that our fathers provide.
First, I think of my dad. Our relationship has definitely changed over the years. It began as daddy's little girl, who was totally wrapped around daddy's finger. I looked up to my Dad and knew that he worked so hard to provide for our family, especially so my mom could stay home. I know I probably didn't always appreciate it the way I should have, since I was a child and lacked understanding of the kind of sacrifice he was making. But now, I get it and am so grateful. We had the crazy teenage years where a lot of the time Dad was just wrong and sometimes even mean. There was the protective Dad when I went to college and was about to get married. More recently, I've discovered my friend. I've learned that I can tell my Dad anything. I've learned how sensitive and caring my Dad is. I can call him for anything and count on him to not only listen, but be there and support me. As a girl, we need to feel safety and security from our fathers, and that is what I have always felt. Thank you Dad, for being a Godly role model I can look up to. Thank you for the countless hours you worked providing for our family. Thank you for always loving me, no matter what. Thanks for being tough, even when it wasn't easy. Thanks for helping to mold me into who I am today by example, by discipline, by prayer, by leadership and by showing me and teaching me about the love of Christ. I love you forever and will always be your little girl, no matter how big I get. Also, thanks for being the BEST Pawpaw EVER.
Then, I think of Dusty, my boy's Dad. You know you've accomplished something when you are literally your boy's hero. And he is just that. Silas and Eli think the world of their daddy, their very best friend. If there's one thing I know, it's that Dusty loves Silas and Eli more than life. He constantly tells me how wonderful and great they are and how there's no way to describe the love he has for them. Not only does he tell me that, but I see it everyday. I see how loving and patient he is with them. When something is wrong or one of them gets hurt, he is so quick on his feet to be at their side to help them feel better. He does special things with the boys all the time and really invests time into them. Thanks, Dust - for being the boy's hero. Thanks for working hard to provide for our family. Thanks for all the family time we have - the boys absolutely love our family Saturdays. They literally wait for you to get home and constantly ask, "Where's Daddy" when you're away - even though they know you are "making the money's" to provide for us (or so we can go to Disneyland ;) I could never say thank you enough for how much you pour into them. They love, love, love you and it's because you are there for them and they know it. I truly appreciate your role as Daddy.
I asked the boys what they wanted to say to Daddy on Father's Day, and this is what I got...
Dear Daddy-
I really, really love you so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so much. You a good daddy because you are the greatest daddy I ever knew. I like when you play Xbox with me and I want to give you a hug and a kiss. So, you're the best daddy ever.
