that's what Christmas is all about.
Opening Silas' folder every day is a big surprise. I never know just what kind of drawing, artwork or papers I'll find in there from day to day. Often I'm taken aback at how fast he's learning, how his handwriting is improving and the things he can do in math. My favorite is probably his "free drawings" where he sits down and colors whatever he chooses just using his imagination. Sometimes it's a dinosaur, a robot or often a family picture with our names clearly labeled. Today, when I saw his drawing I was a bit confused.
At first look, I assumed it must be Santa. Undoubtedly, I wondered why Santa would be so sad. But rather than asking "why is Santa sad?", I asked Silas to explain his picture to me. It immediately made sense.
"That's Charlie Brown and his Christmas tree, Mom."
Obviously. Once I had the correct information, I thought he had done a pretty great job drawing it from memory. He even got the black at the bottom of his shirt. The only confusion for me was that his shirt was red, instead of yellow. Had it been yellow, I think I would have known right away. {Oh, and I love his tree by the way!}
I'm just glad the drawing wasn't of me! {Ha!} However, I probably looked that way this morning. I'm not one to change my clothes 10 times in the morning. I may stand in my closet for 10 minutes staring at my clothes until I figure out what to wear, but I don't change my clothes. {Well, except for this morning...like 4 times}. Sad, but true. I'm not at that in-between stage yet where nothing fits because all my clothes still fit... just differently. What can I say? It's an adjustment. So yeah, needless to say it was a frustrating and stupid morning. Stupid I changed that many times and stupid I cared that much. Oh, and by the way - I still wasn't happy. But oh. well. It was just the beginning of how my day would go.
It's been one of those "Charlie Brown" days where everything seems discouraging and nothing is going right. In the spirit of this post and the season, how about a few lines from A Charlie Brown Christmas to give a little perspective.
There's nothing more to say after that.

Charlie Brown: I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn't have picked this little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don't know what Christmas is all about.
[shouting in desperation]
Charlie Brown: Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?
Linus: Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.
[moves toward the center of the stage]
Linus: Lights, please.
[a spotlight shines on Linus]
Linus: "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'"
[Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]
Linus: That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
There's nothing more to say after that.
