eli's 6th birthday party
Well, I was just saying this morning that planning this party was too easy.
And then, just as the party was about to start, things went a bust! All Eli has been talking about for months is wanting a game truck for his birthday. If you don't know what a game truck is, well... have a look. It's awesome.
He was over-the-moon excited, elated, over-joyed, you name it - and counting down the days for the longest time now. I reserved the truck weeks ago. This morning, I did the usual party prep, getting all the last minute details ready and the decorations set up. My SIL made his cake, my MIL made the cupcakes, and everything was set to be awesome. The truck was to arrive at the school around noon and the party would start at 12:30 p.m.
The truck arrived. {Mind you, the same truck we have had at our school on multiple occasions.} We opened the gate when the driver called to tell me he was almost to our location. But as he tried to turn into the parking lot, the bottom of the truck kept scraping the concrete. No worries - we have three separate entrances. We could try another.
Apparently, all three have a bit of a downward slope. The guy was too afraid he was going to break his truck and decided there was nothing he could do and would not bring it on campus. At this point in the day, there really weren't any other options to find a different game truck. School only had an hour and a half remaining and I couldn't move the party to a different location. Typically, we always do a little party at school {and by party, I mean cupcakes} and then a bigger family party somewhere fun. But this was his BIG party. And so then I had to look in those blue little eyes and tell him the sad news. No game truck.
You can only imagine the tears. Not just from him, but me. I was devastated for him. Thankfully my mother-in-law came to the rescue. Had she not been there, I really don't know what I would have done. She rallied the troops and decided we would just have a "game party". We took all the kids out on the turf and had relay races, played dodgeball, played musical chairs and then sang and ate cupcakes and snacks. And, he had a good time after all.
In the end, I am still disappointed, but happy it didn't ruin his day. I told him we can do whatever FUN thing he wants to do tonight as a family.
Moral of the story - things don't always go as planned. Learn to improvise. And, learn to have FUN no matter what. It was such a bummer, but it really shows me that I need to be and have to teach my kids to be flexible. In the moment, I couldn't see past everything that was horribly wrong, but I am beyond thankful that things took a turn for the better.
I'm so sorry, Eli, that things didn't turn out how you had hoped and planned. But, I am beyond proud of your attitude and good sportsmanship. You are a rock star. And, the cutest SIX YEAR OLD I know!
In keeping with the whole game theme, he wanted Minecraft decorations. And his favorite color, of course, is green. This is what I came up with. I don't think it could've been more green!
