What did you say??
I find myself constantly saying, "Where did you hear that??" Silas is all the sudden sounding so grown up in the way in which he converses. I love talking to him - in the car, when we go out together, just him and I, in the pool, etc. He just has so much to say. And Eli - well, he's always surprised me at how well he speaks. I often wonder where they pick certain things up. They're learning so much at school and I am constantly amazed at what they know.
My boys don't watch tv - they watch movies or Netflix. So, the great thing is that it is completely void of commercials and advertising. The bad thing is - you can't watch anything without something being said that you don't want repeated. Even all the Disney movies have "bad" words. You don't think about it as an adult, until you're watching it through the eyes of a 2 and 5 year old thinking, "Do I really want my kid to say that?" There's so many words from stupid to idiot to jerk. They see and hear it and think it's okay to say. The other day I heard Silas talking with his Grammy. She asked him a question and he replied, "Duuuuuuhhh." He said it perfectly - with the most condescending and rude voice you can imagine. I immediately responded, "Excuse me. We DO NOT say that. Where did you hear that, Silas?"
"Dino Squad."
Good grief. Really Dino Squad? You're killing me.
Then there's the times where they're saying something they've heard, but don't really know what they're saying. For instance, one day Silas blurted, "Oh. My. God." I initially wanted to freak, but I knew he didn't know any better. He obviously heard it somewhere. I addressed it calmly and made sure he knew that we do not say that and if I heard it again, he would definitely be in trouble.
As we speak I'm listening to Dusty and the boys in the other room. Silas said "butt" and he corrected him, "We don't say that word. We say bottom."
Then there's times like this morning where some confusion is involved. I was getting ready and Eli was sitting on the potty doing his business. He said very slowly, "What. the. fudge?" Except, I didn't hear fudge. My heart stopped. My mouth dropped. I was dumb founded. "Eli - WHAT?? Umm, what did you say?"
He grinned.
He said even slower, "What. the. frog."
{long pause}
"What,Why the tree frog scare the puma??"
{LONG sigh of relief}
That scenario turned out better than expected but the point is - we have to be a constant filter as to what are kids are watching and hearing. Obviously, we cannot control outside sources, such as what they hear at school and from friends - but we do have to be sure to give input as to what they're saying at home. It's tough. Sometimes I feel like they're little time bombs. I never know what and when something crazy is gonna come out of their mouths. And believe me, Eli keeps us on our toes. That boy is so random. I mean, why did the tree frog scare the puma? Who the heck knows and why is he thinking about that at 5:30 a.m.? He only knows what's going on inside that head.
As I said, Silas is sounding more grown up by the day. He has especially been into sending texts lately. He'll ask me to write what he says and I'll send his messages verbatim to daddy. I asked him what he wanted to tell everybody about his experience at the dentist and this is what he had to say...
"Dear everybody -
I want to tell you about the dentist. Last night, the dentist had to tape my eyes closed. And then, they had to give me a shot. I was so brave. And then the dentist had to put an iv on my arm after the dentist gave me a shot. And then, it hurt when the dentist gave me a shot. It hurt a little bit but I was so brave. I was even braver than an anaconda. And, I have a cool movie. Do you know what it's called? The cool movie is called Shark boy and Lava girl. The end."

He's a mess. Thank goodness, Silas' dental work is complete. It was frustrating. It was expensive. It was hard watching him not be able to eat much for weeks - (he lost 5 pounds over this whole ordeal). We are so glad it's done and he is right - he was so brave. Eli is awaiting his big appointment. He informed me the other morning, "I go to dentist on Friday. {singing} Fri-day, Fri-day. Gettin' down on Friday. Partyin, partyin, YEAH!! Partyin, partyin, YEAH"
Gotta love the things kids say.
