$.99 Hot Pink Lei = Priceless

Last night, Dusty took Silas and Eli to the $.99 Store to get them out of the house for a few minutes. This was a much needed break after dealing with their craziness all day and also an opportunity for Dusty to experience their fun little attitudes that have transpired since our trip. This was the story I gathered from Dusty when he got home...

The boys went to the back wall to pick out a "prize". It's interesting to see what they'll choose, as it's always different and takes awhile for them to make the "perfect" choice. Sometimes it's bubbles, sometimes it's a car - or a train or a ball. But last night - well, came with two out of the ordinary choices. Silas was apparently drawn to some play money. There was a drawer, like the inside of a cash register, with coins and pretend paper bills. And then there's Eli. He found a mirror. A pink mirror. A pink mirror with Disney princesses on the back. I'd love to know what was going through his little mind. This is my child that never stops making scary noises, flies around the house like a superhero, lasers me while pretending to be iron man, crashes his cars together or simply throws things. Dusty said he tried to hand him a million other things - even different mirrors, but he wouldn't have it. Dusty sent me a picture text while they were at the store and I sent him a text back asking what was going on. He informed me of the situation and I told him not to get that silly mirror. Well, he came home with it. But first, let's just talk about the car ride home.

Dusty said the second they walked out of the store, Eli wanted nothing to do with his mirror. That's not shocking, considering it's not a toy. What's he going to do with a pink, princess mirror? Silas was all happy with his prize and took out a paper bill, showing it to Eli saying, "Eli! Look!" Eli proceeded to rip it out of his hand, crumble it into a ball and shove it into his mouth. I laughed hysterically upon hearing this story later, although I know I wouldn't have, had I been the one dealing with him. So Silas cried, "Ohhhh no, Daddy! It's supposed to be a rectangle and he put it into a ball. Oh no! He put it in his mouth!"

At this point I got a text from Dusty that simply stated, "OH BOY".

I wasn't sure what this meant, and could only wait until he arrived home to hear the details of his fun shopping experience with our newly terrible two year old.

But on a happier note, there's another story about the $.99 store, which I happen to love.

While shopping, Silas saw a hot pink lei. He picked it up, walked to Dusty and asked, "Daddy, can I please get this for my mommy?" Dusty told him he could and later told me Silas was overwhelmingly excited to surprise me with it. When they got home, I could hear Silas from outside, seemingly excited about something. The door bell rang and I opened the door to find Silas standing there grinning ear to ear, with his hands behind his back. All at once, his little arms flew in front of him, revealing his precious gift just for me. "Mommy, I got you a flower necklace because I love you so much! Will you put it on?" Of course, I immediately put it on and he proclaimed, "Awww, mommy. It's so pretty!" I made a huge deal over it for a few minutes, telling him how beautiful it was and how sweet he was to pick it out for me. He was beaming. It was priceless.

Fast forward to this morning.

I was all ready for work and running through the house, grabbing everything I needed to take with us. I told Silas, "Let's go." He looked at me and said, "Mommy, where is your flower necklace?" I told him, "It's in my room Silas. I'll wear it when I get home." "Mommy, it's so pretty. I got it for you because I love you so much. Will you wear it to work?"

What mom could hear this and not wear it? So today, I wore a hot pink lei to work. And, I was proud. As we were walking in, I told everyone we passed about how my sweet Silas got me a surprise. Again, he beamed. Again, it was priceless. And the simple thought that while picking out his own prize, he had the idea to think of me, makes my day. And better yet, him telling me "I got it for you because I love you so much." I have the sweetest 4 year old alive.

And finally, some random bits of information:

1. After 4 years of having one or both of my kids in diapers and being a die hard Huggies fan, I bought the Target brand. My train of thought was as follows - a.) I love everything else that's Target brand, could the diapers be that bad? b.) I need to save some money and how can I pass up more than $3 cheaper per pack? c.) What's the worst that could happen?

So I did it. And so far, I have absolutely no complaints. I don't even want to think about how much money I could have saved over the past 4 years. Hmmmm.

2. So, I put color in my hair every once in awhile to add a bit of moisture and perk it up a bit. I always get the same color. Yesterday, Target was out. I figured there's so many different brands and colors, surely I could get something close enough. I found something I thought looked similar and threw it in the cart. This morning after my usual work out, I got out the box and proceeded to color my hair. I thought the dye in the bottle looked pretty dark. Oh well. Once applied, I thought my hair looked pretty dark. Hmm, how dark could "dark blonde" really be? I mean, it's blonde. After I rinsed it and got out of the shower, I thought my wet hair looked pretty dark. So? It's wet - it's always dark. As I dried my hair, my suspicions were confirmed. It was quite a bit darker than normal. Oh well, it looked alright and I know it'll fade in a couple weeks. After encountering a ton of people at work, I only had two comments, neither complimentary - just stating the obvious that I dyed my hair. So, either it looks really bad or no one really noticed. I'm not sure which is the case, but have decided not to care. I was just proud of myself that I didn't freak out as I typically would. I've gotten used to my hair being really blonde, but my natural hair color is more this shade. Maybe I needed a little change anyway.

3. Has anyone else ever tried Orange Leaf Yogurt? While in Tyler, I experienced this tasty goodness for the first time. It's hands down the BEST yogurt I have ever had. Better than Yogurt Mill, better than Pink Berry, better than anything. I don't even know how to describe it, but it's heaven in your mouth. Maybe I could convince Dusty that we need to open one in San Diego. Or, maybe not - then I might blow up like a balloon. But, it might actually be worth it.

4. Interesting fact. Every single morning while drying my hair, the fuse blows. Sometimes multiple times. This irritates me to say the least. Sometimes I have to take deep breaths over and over. Is it too much to ask to dry my hair in peace? Well, since changing all the light bulbs in our house to the energy saving ones, it has not blown once! Not once. I am a happy camper. Everyone should switch - and the light is beautiful!

  1. Your picture is the first time I've seen your hair and I think the color is beautiful. Of course, I always think you are! And it is close to the color my little girl had.
