being busy or being still?

I like being busy.  I'd be lying if I said it wasn't so.  Being productive simply gives me a sense of accomplishment.

For example:

It's 8:00 p.m. right now.  I got up at 4:00 a.m., worked out, got myself and the boys all bathed and ready, was at work by 7:00 a.m., worked until 2:15 p.m. {where I accomplished another million things}, came home, made lunches for tomorrow, helped the boy's with their homework, made dinner, vacuumed, cleaned two bathrooms, did a load of laundry, gave the baby a bath, got the boys ready for Cub Scouts, put the baby to bed, and have been working on the computer for about 2 hours now.  I love it.  I have a very hard time sitting still.  Which reminds me...

“Be still, and know that I am God..."  Psalm 46:10

Being still makes me antsy.  My mind goes a million miles per hour and I cannot make it stop.  Keeping busy is an easy fix.  In some ways, I don't have to think - I just go into overdrive.

But when I stop to enjoy the simplicity of the mundane, take notice of the beauty of His creation all around me, watch my kids play, listen to the 20 minute story my little Eli wants to tell me, ninja fight with Eli, teach the baby how to walk or learn new words, meditate on His Word, pray, etc... these are the things that fulfill my soul.  These are the things that fill my heart with joy and give me true fulfillment.

I was reading today, "All that is not eternal is eternally useless." {C.S. Lewis} "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Although tasks may keep me busy, I must guard against becoming so busy that I miss Him and/or what's really important in the process.  Just some food for thought.  I'm constantly reminded of the following passage, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered,“you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

I want to choose what is better.

Here's a few photos from today:

1.) Baby being my little assistant at work.
2.) A moment I caught of Eli playing soccer at school.
3.) Eli eating dinner, sans fork.  Who needs one anyway?
4.) Finally a clean baby.  He looks like Pig Pen after the day's over... or probably worse ;)
