Growling in the Waiting Room
I can't believe I forgot to tell this story in my earlier post about the Doctor's office today. Let me set the scene for you. Silas was sitting in the stroller with the iPad, happily watching Diego with his headphones on. I was sitting down and Eli was in the seat next to me. There was an older man sitting on the row across from us and his wife was sitting in a wheel chair directly behind Eli.
Not to be mean, but let's just say this sweet lady wasn't looking so good. She had oxygen and well, it was just kind of a sad sight. I was sitting there minding my own business, when I heard her clear her throat - very loudly, I might add. "ugggghhhhh. hmmmmm. hack hack hack. ugggghhhh" Before I knew it, Eli looked right at her, furrowed his brow and completely mimicked her. I wanted to sink in my seat and die laughing all at the same time.
Then, it happened. As if completely uncontrollable, I let out a little chuckle. You know those times where it's so inappropriate to laugh, but you literally cannot stop it no matter what? This was hands down one of those times.
So, without looking behind me, I pulled Eli up next to me and whispered in his ear, "No, Eli. Shhhh!" while still doing my very best to contain myself. I practically buried my head in a magazine, trying to distract myself and not think about it - because every time I did, I literally had to force myself not to laugh.
Hurry up, hurry up - please call Eli's name! Suddenly I heard from behind me, "uhhhhhh huuummmm. crackle crackle. hack hack. ughhhhhh." It literally sounded like something was dying. And immediately, Eli turned his head back and looked right at her saying, "uhhhh ughhhhh. hack hack. grrrrrrrrrrr" with a mean look on his face, very serious about his growl.
Ohh no! Please, Melissa. Just don't laugh. And...I did it. I laughed out loud. Oops. It was hysterical.
Right at that moment, thank heavens, the nurse called out, "Ellie Sniff." Normally I would say, "Eli" but I darted up as fast as I could and practically ran to the door. I don't know why it hit me the way it did, but it was just so funny. I was still laughing when we got in the room, so I had to explain to the nurse what happened - to which we both died laughing. Okay, a little validation - it really was funny!
I know that poor little lady probably thought my child and I were completely rude. And, I am sorry from the bottom of my heart. I truly wish I could contain what comes out of the mouth of my two year old - but he thought you were growling at him. What's a kid to do but put on his best mean face and growl back? My deepest apologies - for the growling, and the laughing.
