to Eli on your 5th birthday
To Eli on your 5th birthday -
I never know where to begin with you, sweet boy. The name Eli simply makes my heart smile. And I mean, a big, GIANT, cannot contain myself smile. You light up our lives in the best way.
You approached me the other day and said, "Ya knooooow... now that there's another man in the house..."
I stopped you short right there. "Wait a minute. ANOTHER man in the house? Are you kidding me? WHO could that be?"
You grinned ear to ear, giggled and said, "Well, umm. You know? Me! Since I am five and all. Well, almost five... on my birthday."
I love your innocence. It's something that I hope you never completely lose. You have this way about you that totally melts my heart. You are so endearing, so sweet, so funny, so simply lovable. When I laid my eyes on you for the first time, I never could have imagined such a big personality could come out of such a tiny little being. I never could have known how with each day, I could take one look at you and be bursting at the seams with joy. I never could have understood that as much as I loved you in that very moment, that that love would continually grow with each and every moment. You are that special and you are that loved. I have always said that I wish everyone could know you, because there's no accurate way to describe how great you are. You just have to be experienced.
Our first week together was interesting, to say the least. You were in the Special Care Nursery for 7 days. I barely got to hold you before you were wheeled off to the nursery, as you came out grunting and struggling a bit to breathe. It was hours before I could make my way to see you and was told you had not stopped grunting since you had been brought there. The instant I placed my hand on your sweet little back, you stopped. Fighting back the tears, I fell head over heels in love and knew that I needed you as much as you needed me.
Eli, you are so special to us. You bring life to our family. Your unbelievable imagination, your ninja moves, your observations about life, your jokes, your energy, the way you love, your friendship with your brothers, your ability to always express what's on your mind -- are just a few of the things that we love about you. Oh, and you have the best laugh on the face of the planet. Hearing you laugh brings me so much joy. I mean, I get tickled just thinking about it.
You are so excited to be turning five, yet at the same time keep reminding me that you want to stay with me forever. You don't want to go to college or get married, because you never want to leave your family. I know that will change, but I won't lie - I love that you feel that way for now. You tell me everyday that I am so beautiful and that you love me no less than fifty times a day. You love to snuggle and love to play. You love when we watch you dance, do your moves or listen to you tell a story. Your favorite color is green and your favorite food is pickles. Yes, pickles. You love hamburgers, anything sweet {especially chocolate} and want dessert after every meal - even breakfast. You love animals and know almost everything there is to know about every animal - or so it seems. Your favorite ride at Disneyland changes every time you go, but you love Goofy's Flight School and the Ferris Wheel. You are always thinking of others and want to give mommy a present almost every day. You are simply THE sweetest.
I really could go on and on and on and on and on. But mostly, I want you to know that YOU ARE LOVED. You are loved beyond measure. You are our sweet Eli Jackson and there is nothing you could ever ever do that would make us stop loving you {I only say this because sometimes you often ask}. I love you to the moon and back, to infinity and beyond, and a million billion gazillion infinities times ten.
Have the happiest birthday ever, my little man.
Love, Mommy
