Saturday in the Park

There's nothing quite like the sweet innocence of a child. I love the playfulness, without a single care in the world or any inhibitions. Yesterday we took the boys to the park and Silas was playing on the "big" playground while Eli was playing on the smaller one. It was such an interesting thing to sit off to the side and watch Silas play and interact with the other kids. It is so precious because he's gotten where he'll just start playing with anyone - to him, everyone is his friend. Well, there were two older boys there playing and Si decided he was going to tag along. He started chasing after them- up the stairs, over the bridge, down the slide, etc. The sad part was he thought they were also playing with him, but they weren't! One boy said to the other, "that little boy is trying to get us." They were just trying to get away from him, while he thought it was part of the game. Part of me wanted to laugh and the other part was really sad. But, at least he was too naive to know or understand what was happening. So there he was, continuing to chase after them yelling, "hey you mad agents! Stop in the name of the law!" I couldn't help but smile to myself and think about how much I love that kid.

Then there's Eli, in the swing not too far away yelling, "Si!! Si!!". He absolutely loves his big brother. It makes me so happy knowing that they have one another. I know that no matter what, they'll always be there for each other and will also be better for it. Eli already copies every single thing Silas does and Silas already stands up for Eli. At school the other day Eli picked up a toy and another kid in Silas' class told him, "no, you can't have that." Silas proceeded to tell him, "hey, you don't be mean to my brother." That right there will melt your heart. I love my two sweet boys more than words could say. It's a funny thing being a mommy, because you want to give them the world and protect them from hurt. You can't comprehend it until you're a parent, but it truly hurts you to the core when your child is in some sort of pain. But part of them growing up is experiencing the joys and trials of life and learning how to deal with those things. As parents, we have to find the balance between sheltering their experiences and letting them live. Even this silly little experience in the park, of which Silas knew nothing about, brought me some perspective. My role is to love those boys with all my heart, provide for them, teach them the things of God, and hopefully my life will be a representation of God's love. But I cannot live for or do everything for them- only guide them in the way they should go. I pray with all my heart that God gives me the strength and grace to do just that.
