Bittersweet

I've been sitting here staring at the screen not knowing how to begin. Today is Thanksgiving and I know I have a zillion things to be thankful for. I have a wonderful family and the two greatest kids that ever walked the face of the planet (and cutest by the way). They constantly light up my life. All I have to do is look at them and it seems they're always doing something cute and wonderfully amazing and that brings a smile to my face. I live in a beautiful city, that people from all over the country travel to vacation. I have a nice home, two nice cars, and am in need of nothing! I am grateful that God loves me and offers me his unconditional love and grace. I am thankful, so very thankful. There's no other way around it - I know that I am blessed. The one thing in my life that I really struggle with is being away from my family. It's interesting to me because I feel like the older I get and the more of my life I live, the more I miss it. Not that I didn't always - I guess it's just the more I live, the more I realize it's the people in my life that are important. Who cares what I'm wearing or where I live - it's the relationships in my life that are valuable. And not just with people, but with God. In the end, that's all that really matters anyway.

The reasoning for my title of this post, "bittersweet", is because my mom came to San Diego from Texas to visit with us for Thanksgiving. We have had such a nice, relaxing and enjoyable week together. The boys have had an absolute blast and Silas already told her that she was not going home, but was going to stay. My dad stayed in Texas with Jay, Rebekah, Jackson & Haven. While I was able to spend this special week and day with my mom, I was saddened to not see everyone else. It was such a fabulous day and now I'm sitting here, unable to sleep, sad that it has to end. We have to get up early tomorrow and send my mom back home on the airplane to Tyler. There is no way to describe the pit that is in my stomach and how that just hurts my heart. I genuinely hate it. I hate being away from people that I love, and who love me. There's something safe about the love you receive from your family. It doesn't matter what you do or how you act, you can just relax around them. You don't have to be anything other than just plain ole you - it's just comfortable. I certainly know the love I have for my kids, and I know that's how my parents feel about me. Not to mention, how they feel about their grandkids. There's nothing like seeing my parents play and interact with my kids. I think it's the greatest thing ever and it breaks my heart every time we are separated again. I will never forget when Silas was born. My parents were able to fly in on his birthday and stayed with us for a little over a week. It was amazing. Then the day came when we had to send them off with my week old son in my arms, both my parents crying, and me just a hysterical mess. In that instant I felt devastated. Since then, I still feel that same pit in my stomach when they come and go. I remember the same feeling when Eli was born and the very first time they said goodbye to him. For that trip, they had driven from Texas. So they got up early one morning and walked out my door, and drove off with me feeling like my house was empty. I hate that empty feeling. Your house was full all week, and you come back home and it seems like something is missing. I see the empty closet where their suitcases were, the blankets folded up on the bed, and still smell my dad's cologne in my bathroom. It just plain sucks.

I know I'm going on and on right about now. I'm not trying to be pessimistic or drown in my sorrow. I truly believe that I am blessed beyond measure and have so much to be thankful for. I pray that God will give me the grace to continue to deal with this particular situation, because it's something that's really hard for me. I have lived away from my family for almost 9 years now (crazy!!). I keep waiting for it to get easier. I'll end with lyrics from a Caedmon's Call song, "Faith My Eyes". I was listening to this the other day and there's never a time I hear this song that it doesn't bring tears to my eyes.

As I survey the ground for ants
Looking for a place to sit and read
I'm reminded of the streets of my hometown
How they're much like this concrete that's warm beneath my feet.

And how I'm all wrapped up in my mother's face
With a touch of my father just up around the eyes
And the sound of my brother's laugh
But more wrapped up in what binds our ever distant lives.

But if I must go
Things I trust will be better off without me
But I don't want to know
Life is better off a mystery

So keep 'em coming these lines on the road
And keep me responsible be it a light or heavy load
And keep me guessing with these blessings in disguise
And I'll walk with grace my feet and faith my eyes.

Hometown weather is on TV
I imagine the lives of the people living there
And I'm curious if they imagine me
Cause they just wanna leave; I wish that I could stay

But I get turned around
I mistake some happiness for blessing
But I'm blessed as the poor
Still I judge success by how I'm dressing.

So I'll sing a song of my hometown
I'll breathe the air and walk the streets
Maybe find a place to sit and read
And the ants are welcome company.

And I'll walk with grace my feet and faith my eyes
And I'll walk with grace my feet and faith my eyes

That about sums it up. In the end, I pray that I will truly see the blessings I have in my life and also cherish the moments I do have with my family. I also hope I never take forgranted the people in my life, and take every opportunity to tell and show them how much I love them. We never know what life will bring us. All we can do is make the best of what comes and live each day to the fullest, with Christ as our strength and love as our focus.
God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving.

  1. You make me cry every time I get on here... Quit doing that to me.
You just have to remember that although miles away, your family is ALWAYS in your heart, so in essence, they are ALWAYS right there with you.

  2. :) Well, I find this to be such an outlet, so I just speak from my heart. I have always had a hard time expressing myself verbally, but writing is so easy for me. I literally just sit down, start typing, and it spills out.
And thanks for your encouragement. I know it's true, just not always easy to live!
