our crazy lives lately.
My last post ended with a wrap up of our awesome spring break. That was twenty six days ago. The past almost four weeks have been crazy busy. Where to even begin...
The very day we went back to school {after 10 days off}, JJ decided to take a little leap off the couch after watching his older, "ninja" brother do the same. I was upstairs at the time and heard a very loud scream. Not a normal cry, but a shriek of absolute pain. That scream was one that has greatly impacted the past several weeks.
JJ is our adventurous, fearless child. I have always said that he would be our first trip to the ER, the first broken bone, the first major accident. He never sits still, is always into trouble, and not a thing in the world scares him. He's the kid that will run off and not look back. The one that will push every button. The one that will knowingly give me a mischievous look as he's about to do something he knows he shouldn't... and proceed with a grin. Sure, he gets hurt on occasion but is up and running again before we know it. But I knew as soon as a heard him scream that this wasn't nothing.
Dusty found him on the floor. As we carefully laid him on the couch {trying not to move him too much}, we didn't see anything at first glance. Since he wouldn't stop crying, we decided to ice his foot. When he didn't stop within a reasonable amount of time, we simply tried to distract him with a snack and a movie. We managed to get him comfortable enough, or so we thought. Thus began an entire night of him tossing, turning, crying, screaming, flailing all over the bed, and proclaiming, "I HAVE AN OWIE!!! Make it feel better!!!" Dusty finally called an advice nurse around 2:00 a.m. after hours of restlessness, and we were told to call first thing in the morning to make an appointment. In hindsight, I almost wish we would have taken him to the ER then - but we still saw no swelling or bruising, his foot not looking any different than the other. The only big clue was that he refused {even after hours} to put any weight on it. JJ notrunning around the house like a crazy person and getting out of bed 100 times wanting to move is a sign of a serious problem.
After a completely sleepless night, I sent the big boys to school with Grammy and called the doctor first thing. After x-rays, the doctor thought it looked "a little off", but couldn't be sure. Baby feet look very different than adult feet, there is a ton of cartilage, and it's just harder to see breaks/fracturse. He wanted radiology to take a closer look. He said it was either very badly strained or there was a fracture. I would receive a phone call after the x-ray had been read.
Okay.
We went home, still unable to walk and in serious pain.
After not hearing anything for the rest of the day, I called the following day - on Thursday. The nurse informed me that the x-ray still had not been read. I pleaded with her to please call me as soon as she heard anything because he is TWO, not improving, and just miserable.
Two more days passed. Two days of JJ laying in my bed {which is 100 percent contrary to his personality}, not walking, and me staying home with him. Finally, by the weekend he had had enough. He washaving a nervous breakdown losing it. He wanted to be up and about and play with his brothers. He was tired of sitting. So, he figured out that he could walk on his heel. He oh so pathetically began to hobble around. Monday came around and since I hadn't heard from the doctor, I figured we'd get back on our schedule and return to work/school - I mean, he was "walking". Then, around 1:45 p.m. I got a phone call.
"I just got JJ's x-rays...."
Okay, you just gotta know on the inside I was fuming already. Whaaaaat???
"It seems that Jeremiah has fractured his foot... in three places."
???????????
No words. Just, none.
I was told they had already made a referral to orthopedics and to call. As soon as I got off the phone and went a little bananas, I called orthopedics. "We don't have an appointment for two days."
Ummm, no. Just no. After nicely explaining {I promise} that the injury had happened SIX days ago and I had taken him the following morning and he is TWO, I got an appointment the next hour.
JJ was a trooper, laughing and giggling throughout the whole appointment. When we walked in the waiting room he proclaimed to everyone, "LOOK everybody!! I got a shiny new shoe!!! My fwiends are gonna LUB it!!"
It was very exciting for him. And then... we got to the car.
"Momma, pwease take my shoe OFF!!!"
{putting my head down.....} This was going to be a loooooooong three weeks.
At some point, I figured he would adjust.
Just, nope.
It's been three weeks of the utmost crankiness, clinginess, grumpiness, whininess {that's not even a word, I know} that you can imagine. I love him, I do. From the bottom of my heart. I feel horrible for him. But, I will be ever so happy to get my happy boy back -- {crossing our fingers that he's still there}
And in between all that, we had my niece's 14th birthday, my MIL's birthday, Dusty's birthday, Dusty's graduation from CalBaptist where he received his Masters, the utmost craziness at work getting ready for Mother's Tea, the boys had their SAT testing {for my Texas friends, this is not the college SAT's.. duh! It's their standardized testing..}, and ya know.. just the normal day to day stuff.
